Receptacles
One of the most commonly added electrical features in storage containers are standard 110V receptacles. They deliver the same level of power as a standard receptacle within your home. For storage containers, they are available with either two or four outlets, depending on your needs. They can also be installed flush mounted (wiring run behind the walls) or exposed on the surface of the wall paneling (wiring run in surface mounted conduit). While they can be placed anywhere in your storage container, these receptacles can also be placed on the exterior with waterproof covers to maintain safety and functionality.

Overhead Lighting
Lighting can completely transform your storage container, which is why many users choose to install overhead lighting. Most commonly, units are outfitted with 4ft overhead LED fixtures. While 20ft containers typically receive two lights, 40ft containers need four lights for the same effect. Additionally, multiple switches can be added to the storage container to control the lights from various points within the unit. Depending on your business’s unique needs, the number of lights, the type of fixture, and the placement can be adjusted accordingly.

LED Lights
LED lights are a great option if you are in a remote location or don’t have access to power on-site. The LED lights can be hooked up to a small battery to provide power and illuminate the interior of your container.

Flood Light
Seeking outdoor lighting for your storage container? Flood lights add visibility to the perimeter of storage containers, enhancing safety and security while allowing authorized users to easily access their units at any time of day. These flood lights can be installed in various spots depending on your needs, and they can also be mounted with motion sensors to minimize energy usage while providing security.
Porch Lighting
Porch lights also provide a reliable way to add visibility to your container’s perimeter and keep your belongings safer around the clock. Businesses across various industries opt to install porch lights immediately above doors or windows to improve container functionality and security even further.
Data & Phone
Looking to set up offices and other workspaces in your storage container? Data and phone connections can be added to improve functionality within the unit. Cat5 lines can be added and terminated to an outlet for a simplified setup. By installing this feature in your storage container, you can completely transform the space.
Uses for Electric and Lighting in Shipping Containers
How do businesses most commonly use electric and lighting modifications in their shipping containers? Learn about some of the top ways to modify your storage container into a transformed space.
1. Pop-Up Shops
Pop-up shops housed in shipping containers provide retailers a flexible and cost-effective way to reach customers in different locations. Electricity is necessary for lighting displays, point-of-sale systems, security cameras, and HVAC capabilities, all of which create a welcoming environment and functional shopping experience for customers. Accent spotlights and overhead lighting both help showcase products and set the tone of the store, whether it’s a boutique clothing store or a mobile food and beverage spot. Without proper lighting and electrical outlets, these pop-ups would be unable to function effectively.
2. Workshops
Shipping container workshops are a popular solution for mechanics and tradespeople who need a dedicated work area. These workshops require reliable power to operate tools and machinery, charge batteries, and run ventilation systems. Adequate lighting is also a must for safety and precision while completing these tasks. With custom wiring, circuit panels, and energy-efficient lighting installed, a container workshop becomes a dependable workspace. This delivers a much more cost-effective solution when compared to building a permanent work area. Plus, since these containers were made for transportation, they can be easily transported if work needs to be done on a different site.
3. Offices
Many businesses use converted shipping containers as on-site offices or remote workspaces. Electricity enables the operation of computers, printers, routers, and other essential office equipment. HVAC systems, overhead lighting, and power outlets are essential for productivity and comfort. LED lighting is often used to reduce energy consumption. With the right setup, container offices provide a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to conventional office buildings.
4. Breakrooms
On construction sites and in industrial environments, shipping containers are often turned into breakrooms where workers can rest. Electrical installations allow for refrigeration, microwaves, coffee makers, and other kitchen appliances, and lighting keeps the space safe and usable at any time of day. Power also supports HVAC systems, fans, or heaters, making the container comfortable in any weather conditions. This allows companies to keep their employees comfortable even in remote locations with these easy-to-transport containers.
5. Showrooms
Shipping container showrooms are increasingly popular for product displays at trade shows, festivals, and events. These portable spaces need power to run multimedia displays, lighting fixtures, audio systems, and more. Lighting design is especially important in showrooms, as it helps to draw attention to products and showcase the products in a way that is easy for potential buyers to see. Strategically placed spotlights, backlighting, and ambient lighting all contribute to a high-quality customer experience.
