Need a storage container that differs from standard dimensions or specifications? Over the years, the NorthCo Storage Solutions team has converted various units to create custom containers for businesses across industries. No matter your needs, we can work with you to create the perfect container.

Entry Doors

The standard shipping container features cargo doors on one end. However, this configuration isn’t ideal for every use and can be altered accordingly. Businesses can modify their shipping containers to add a standard or heavy-duty roll-up door on the side or end of a unit, depending on their needs. They can also be outfitted with industrial or residential personnel doors, which span 3 feet in width.

Windows & Skylights

For companies that plan to modify their storage container into an office, pop-up shop, mobile workshop, or various other uses, windows and skylights can transform the space. Double-pane windows are available in 2ft x 3ft and 3ft x 3ft variations with screens, and skylights can be added in various sizes upon request. If needed, security bars are available on windows for extra security.

Flooring

While most standard storage container uses are ideal for the typical 1-1/8” thick marine plywood, other applications call for custom flooring. Steel overlays, vinyl flooring coverings, and commercial carpet tiles are available to suit your container floor to your specific needs. Steel overlays can be added in various thicknesses, and carpet tiles are available in a range of colors.

HVAC

Whether you need simple ventilation or a complete HVAC system in your shipping container, we’ve got you covered. Our ventilation options include ventilation air ducts, rooftop turbine vents, fixed louver vents, and exhaust fans. Our HVAC options include window air conditioning units and commercial through-wall HVAC systems. These variations allow users to customize their containers to suit their unique needs.

Insulation & Interior Finishing

Standard containers are not insulated or finished on the interior, but the interior climate of your container can be drastically improved by adding insulation. You can modify your container with fiberglass insulation with FRP plywood paneling, rigid polystyrene foam paneling, fiberglass insulation with Hardie paneling, or closed-cell spray foam, depending on the level of insulation needed for your contents.

Electrical & Lighting

Your business can create a fully functional space in your shipping container with our electrical and lighting modifications. One of the most commonly added electrical features is 110V receptacles, which are available in two- or four-outlet varieties. These receptacles can be added on the interior or exterior of a unit. Our lighting customizations include overhead lighting, LED lights, flood lights, and porch lights. For those setting up workspaces or offices, data and phone lines can be added to your unit.

Custom Paint

Want to brand your container with your company’s colors and logo? Custom paint can improve the aesthetics of your container and deliver extra protection from the elements. We use a marine-grade industrial enamel from Sherwin-Williams, allowing for durability and an enhanced appearance.

Locking Mechanisms

Enhance the security of your storage container with added locking mechanisms. We offer heavy-duty cargo door locks manufactured by the Equipment Lock Company and security swing arms to place over personnel doors. Additionally, your container can be outfitted with a lockbox welded directly onto its doors to add a padlock.

Shelving

With added shelving and racks, you can keep the contents of your container organized and protected. Our shelving systems hang from the interior “D” rings of the container, meaning they typically don’t require any interior or exterior modifications and can be easily removed.

Benefits of Modifying Your Storage Container

Why should your business invest in modifications in addition to the price of your storage container? Learn about five of the top benefits of customizing your shipping container.

1. Improved Operations

Modifying your storage container can lead to smoother, more efficient operations. Whether you’re using the container on a jobsite, for retail overflow, or as a mobile office, adding features like shelving, lighting, climate control, or easy-access doors helps streamline daily tasks. These upgrades eliminate the need to constantly move items around or work in uncomfortable conditions, saving time and effort for your employees. With modifications tailored to your workflow, your team can stay organized, focused, and productive.

2. Versatility

One of the biggest advantages of customizing a storage container is how adaptable it becomes. A standard container offers basic storage, but with the right modifications, it can transform into an office, breakroom, equipment room, a disaster relief station, or even a pop-up storefront. By customizing features like entry points, windows, HVAC systems, or electrical outlets, a single unit can serve many functions and easily shift to meet evolving needs. This flexibility makes modified containers ideal for businesses that need mobile solutions.

3. Better Return on Investment

Modifying a container is a smart way to increase the value and longevity of your container. Instead of renting or building new facilities every time you have a new need, a customized container can provide long-term functionality at a lower total cost. Many businesses find that a one-time investment in modifications saves money over time by reducing the need for additional equipment, storage units, or rental spaces. A well-maintained, modified container continues to pay off by remaining usable across multiple projects or locations.

4. Customized Solutions

Every business is different, and container modifications let you build a solution that works specifically for your needs. From layout to interior finishes, electrical systems to shelving arrangements, you can design the container to support your exact use case. This level of customization is especially valuable in industries like construction, retail, agriculture, or event planning.

5. Cost-Effectiveness

Compared to permanent construction or leasing commercial space, modifying a shipping container is a highly cost-effective option. You avoid the high upfront costs and delays of traditional building projects while still getting a fully functional, durable space. Plus, since containers are built to last and withstand harsh conditions, your investment remains protected long-term.

Storage Container Modification FAQs

Permit requirements vary by location and by the scope of your modification. In many cases, simple changes like installing shelves or electrical outlets don’t require a permit. However, if you’re modifying the container for use as a permanent structure, such as an office or retail space, you will likely need permits related to zoning, construction, and occupancy. Always check with your local building authority before starting your project.

The timeline depends on the complexity of the modifications. When you work with the team at NorthCo Storage Solutions, we will give you a realistic timeframe upfront based on your design.

Costs can vary widely. Basic modifications may start at a few hundred dollars, while fully customized containers outfitted as offices, retail units, or workshops can cost several thousand dollars or more. Factors affecting price include the size of the container, materials used, labor, and complexity of the design.
